Half in Shadow: Black Women in Academia

6:30 PM – 7:30 PM

Description

Description

Join us as local authors and academics Dr. Shanna Greene Benjamin and Dr. Janaka Bowman Lewis discuss Benjamin’s latest work: Half in ShadowHalf in Shadow explores the life and work of Nellie Y. McKay a scholar renowned for her work coediting the Norton Anthology of African American Literature as well as her scholarship on Toni Morrison.

While her academic work paved the way for the inclusion of Black literature in English departments nationwide, McKay was fiercely protective of details of her personal life. Benjamin’s work explores this dichotomy and “examines McKay's path through the professoriate to learn about the strategies, sacrifices, and successes of contemporary Black women in the American academy.”
