South Boulevard Rookie Science: Lunar Lander Challenge

This program will be provided by South Boulevard library staff.

Discover the world of science through books, hands-on educational activities, and experiments. July 20 is Space Exploration Day! Join us as we explore the universe with a fun space-themed STEAM challenge. 

Your Space Exploration Day mission – to land astronauts safely on the moon using a lunar lander of your own design. We will investigate space and motion as we build our own shock-absorbing landing gear.

A Take and Make Kit will be available from the South Boulevard Library a week before the program. Each registered participant can reserve a kit. Reservations will be required so we can prepare the kits as needed.

The materials needed for this challenge:

  • piece of cardstock paper (or cardboard)
  • small plastic cup
  • index cards
  • 3-4 rubber bands
  • 1 regular marshmallow
  • 8-10 miniature marshmallows
  • 3-4 plastic straws

Additional items (not included kits):

  • Scissors
  • Tape
