This course teaches digital photography and visual storytelling. Covering transitioning from Auto to manual mode, exposure triangle, composition, and selecting subjects to further the visual narrative goals. The class will aim to amplify each student's story visually. The prerequisite for the course is a digital camera, whether an iPhone, iPad, point-and-shoot, or DSLR. They will learn to capture purposeful images, delving into visual storytelling with photo-walks covering landscapes and architecture, and practice portrait sessions. Homework assignments, image reviews, artist statements, vision boards, and shoot planning are included. The course culminates in a student art exhibition on August 30th.
July 9 - Session 1: Instructor-led art show - Visual Narrative description, Class introductions, review class syllabus, explore classroom goals/objectives, establish student skill levels. Understanding camera basics, Raw vs jpeg, auto vs. manual Homework given (technical exercises)
July 16 - Session 2: Exposure Triangle-the basics(with emphasis on shutter speed) -Photowalk to practice knowledge on Shutter Speed and movement on location-Homework Given (technical exercises)
July 23 - Session 3: Shooting with Intention- visual storytelling basics - Detailed instruction on Aperture settings and understanding depth of field. Review last weeks images. Photowalk focusing on Landscapes and Architecture in the neighborhood - Homework given (technical exercises)
July 30 - Session 4: Writing a statement prior to photographing - students will practice writing their thoughts about their subject prior to going on a photowalk - Subject matter their choice. Detailed instruction on Composition - Homework reviewed and new given (technical exercises)
August 6 - Session 5: Photo critiques - reviewing skills and practicing aperture, shutter, and composition - Photo session on location focusing on Portraits and Understanding natural light. (Homework is student-led shooting for the show)
August 13 - Session 6: Photo critique - review. On-site Photo sessions to practice problem areas. Give show invites to students to pass out to friends and family. Homework (students have the opportunity to refine images)
August 20 - Session 7: Photo Selection for show, final critique - review Photowalk to practice problem areas. Selection and practice for students who wish to present at the show. Students will have one final opportunity to reshoot and email final images for show printing.
August 30 - Session 8: Student Exhibition at North Regional Recreation Center
