This full-color, Newbery-Honor graphic novel is well represented by its cover art with Asteroid in her kick butt costume (including her rainbow socks from her former best friend Nicole). Even though this story just covers one summer in Astrid's life, we learn so much along with her about hard work, friendship, honesty and encouraging others. Her notes back and forth to Rainbow Bite were a highlight of the book for me. I also appreciate the resolution to conflict that was modeled throughout. Last, but not least -- Roller Derby! Now I must go see our very own Kansas City Roller Warriors when their 2020 season begins.

Charming book about trying new things, making new friends, working hard, and struggling through life. I smiled while reading it and look forward to more from Miss Jamieson.

When her mom takes her to a Roller Derby, Astrid REALLY wants to roller skate. She signs up for a summer Roller Derby camp, and expects her best friend, Nicole, to sign up as well. Things don't go as Astrid expected. This is one of my favorite books. I would recommend this book to everybody.

Astrid and her best friend, Nicole, are going through their separate ways and Astrid is hurt by it. Astrid loves roller derby and can't understand why her bff Nicole loves ballet. Astrid is forced to join the team alone and she realizes that it's harder than she thought.

Topics are friendship, mother and daughter relationships, finding your self.

If it doesn't make you smile, you are simply broken. Roller Derby, Portland Oregon, and engaging middle school drama at its best.

This fun graphic novel received a laundry list of well-deserved awards in 2015 and is recommended for fans of Raina Telgemeier’s Smile. When twelve-year-old Astrid is dragged to yet another one of her single mom’s “cultural experiences,” it turns out to be roller derby, to see strong, empowered women. Astrid falls in love with the game and is sure her best friend Nicole will sign up for summer skate camp with her. But the girls are about to enter junior high and everything is changing. Nicole is interested in boys, makeup and ballet and she’s going to dance camp. Suddenly without her best friend, Astrid focuses on improving her (rather abysmal) derby skills so that she can play in a real bout. But does being so hardcore mean she’ll lose her new derby friend, Zoey? I’m intrigued by roller derby, so I really liked that the author plays for the Portland Rose City Rollers and used her experience to bring the game to life with costumes, terminology and cool names (Jamieson’s alter-ego is Winnie the Pow – how awesome is that?) (Submitted by Gayle).

Roller Girl is a great graphic novel for middle schoolers. This book depicts preteen feelings and friendships perfectly and how they can get messy. Characters learned from their mistakes and grew as individuals while finding their passions.

When I was a kid, I remember devouring Chris Crutcher's books because they were the only books I could find that were set in the Pacific Northwest. It was such a treat to read this book, full of references to childhood locations: Oaks Park, Springwater trail, etc. A must-read for all Portland kids!

I only give this book four stars. You wanna know why? I didn't like it when she lied to her mom about two things: one she lied about her friend's mom driving her home and she walked home instead across a HIGHWAY! The second thing is that she lied about her friend going to derby camp with her. And I think there's one more lie she did.
Overall, it was a great book. I think you should read it.

Yeay! I loved this book. It's super inspiring and dramatically funny! Astrid is such a cool character, and never gives up. Really makes me realize how hard it is to try out a new sport.
She is creative, and makes big sacrifices for her friends. Astrid could actually be a asteroid!
Must read!!

Totally awesome! Roller girl Astrid really tries hard. Spoiler: I love the part where she dyes her hair! Thinking about dying my own
The roller name asteroid really suits her! Ps who can tell me who is jack Hugh man?! Oh I think he’s a tv star or something. I love ❤️ this book! Be on the 👀 look out for All’s fair by Victoria Jamieson , same author of Roller Girl! I already have it, pretty good.

Totally awesome empowering tween fiction. The story offers a satisfying and realistic blend of risk-taking and roiling emotion, while still remaining in a cocoon of supportive family and adults. Should be read by kids and parents alike.

I love how Astrid Always looked up to rainbow bite like an older sister and how Rainbow bite looked to her as a younger sister. I also liked how at the end they both wanted each others autographs.

Astrid spends a summer at a roller derby camp. Barely able to even skate, much less stop, Astrid has a long way to go before she is ready for her first bout. But her struggles with both old and new friends, and conflict with her protective mother complicate things along the way. If you are not already a fan of roller derby, you will be before you finish this great book!
