Conceptually interesting and thematically enraging/heartbreaking, but the execution didn't work for me.

This book took my breath away. Butler examines the lives of the enslaved and slave holders from a 20 century time traveler; how do you reach the point where you do what you never thought you would, what is your breaking point?

“Kindred” by Octavia Butler is an unforgettable time traveling adventure that takes place between the 1800s and 1970s.With an uncontrollable ability to travel to the past whenever her help is needed, Dana interacts with her ancestors,…

Intense, thought-provoking, and heartbreaking. Kindred is a fantastic read, one of Octavia Butler's more popular works for a reason. It's a book that asks a question that every black reader has asked themselves, and its answer is one that…

I am not generally a lover of the time-travel novel. However, Kindred is a page turner with something more to say. Butler did not write Kindred with the Science Fiction novel in mind. She wanted to show how a modern black woman would…

Very powerful read. I enjoyed the character Dana and her husband the sacrifices they made to help themselves and others searching for truths. I felt like I was present every step of the way! Very Good Book! Cudos to the writer!

An interesting book where the main character, Dana, travels back int time and place. She finds herself in the South saving a boy who is her ancestor. She is black and finds herself in the antebellum South. The ancestor is white. She only…

From the days of the blind bards of old, speculative fiction has served a dual purpose of fascinating us and offering a unique and disparate lens through which to view our own lives. For Rod Serling, The Twilight Zone allowed him to put…

Octavia Butler’s most well-known novel, and probably her most approachable book for most readers. The nearly 45 years since the novel was written have not diminished its power or the need for it to be read. It is a modern classic of…

This is one of the most fascinating, original, nuanced works of fiction I have ever read. This novel about a modern-day twenty-something who involuntarily keeps time traveling to antebellum Maryland could make an excellent pick for adult…

Many commenters below of described the plot device, I won't repeat them. It is amazing to me that this book was published in 1979 when even as the Civil Rights movement had risen for a black woman to write such a book and get it published…

Kindred will appeal to science and historical fiction fans. It includes time travel, but is not like a typical science fiction book. You are swept up into the world of slavery in 19th century Maryland. Dana, who is from 1976, is…

I found this book to be brutally honest and it was too difficult to finish. So I have not rated it. I have no doubt that it is an excellent book. Butler has the ability to bring characters and scenes to life on the page.

Certainly a different kind of time-travel book, and for a 70+ yo white man, a grim glimpse into slavery in the US. Lots of questions about why Dana did or didn't do this or that (like bring more useful items with her into the past); but…

Stephen-King-esque horror novel, thematically about a modern woman haunted by family history of American Slavery. Written in contemporary language, and lacking the authentic dialogue or true sensibilities from the time. The magical plot…

Written in 1979, Kindred is a story of American slavery that uses time travel to effectively put a modern American woman into the historic roll of a slave. Her grappling with the reality and the human issues involved is very moving and…
