Josey Aimes needs a job and goes to work at a Minnesota steel mine after splitting with her violent husband. But the job proves to be almost as harrowing as her marriage. The male miners are resentful of women taking their jobs, so the men verbally abuse and play humiliating pranks on the female miners. After being physically assaulted by a coworker, Josey tries to fight against the harassment, but none of the other women will join her case for fear that things will only get worse. A fictionalized account of the first major successful sexual harassment case in the U.S. - Jenson vs. Eveleth Mines, where a woman who endured a range of abuse while working as a miner filed and won a landmark 1984 lawsuit.

Charlize Theron is a terrific actress. Her performance is just exquisite!

An important message that was belabored to death with overwrought and laughably absurd, cartoonish behavior from one dimensional stereotypical characters. Very poorly realized which is unfortunate for such a significant topic. Did a disservice to women’s rights and insulted the Iron Range.

What a great story, with excellent acting. We really liked it and wonder how we missed it when it came out.

North Country is one of the better movies I've seen that was mostly filmed in Minnesota; it didn't make my Top 5 list of movies filmed in the state, but I would include it in a Top 10 list. The cast and their performances are excellent. Though you may have seen stories like this one before, I think it is important to revisit them so we don't forget what is possible, both the good and the bad, and how far we've come. North Country is rated R for sequences involving sexual harassment, including violence and dialogue, and for language.

Very emotional movie. I felt heartbreak for Josie and the other women, frustration, and lots of anger at the treatment of the women by their male co-workers. I found myself speaking out loud asking "what makes that funny"? and wondering how men could treat women the way that they did. Those men all had women in their lives, mothers, sisters, wives and yet they treated these women so badly. This movie is worth watching!

Incredibly moving, I found NORTH COUNTRY to be one of those films that ignites you. You'll be so furious at the indignity that Josey Aimes and her fellow miners endure that you'll cry. It is a travesty that the simple act of making a living can humiliate you and endanger your life and well-being. No one should be subjected to the harassment those women experienced on the daily. The story is a simple, true one: a single mother leaves her abusive husband to raise her two kids alone, and faced with dwindling employment options, she follows her childhood friend Glory to the Minnesota mines, where she and a handful of others are breaking the gender barrier in that industry. Unbelievably outnumbered, there is no sister solidarity here, and each faces the realization that the most hazardous part of their job is their coworkers. The cast is the kind that you dream about: Charlize Theron, Frances McDormand, Woody Harrelson, Sean Bean, Jeremy Renner, Michelle Monaghan, Sissy Spacek, and Richard Jenkins. I don't know what else to say: this film has rendered me speechless. I highly recommend it.

In tones of Norma Rae and many others, this movie is predictable. A couple of major differences over other movies of this ilk is that this movie literally scrapes the restroom floor and walls for graphics, even not resisting overturning a PortaPotty for extreme emphasis along with other disturbing images and scenes. In fairness to young people over 12, it is instructive to see what uncivilized behaviors their mothers, aunts, sisters and female ancestors sustained from many male ancestors, fathers, husbands, boyfriends and even children since the beginning of organized labor.

One of Charlize Theron's best performances.

A powerful, tough and moving film about the first class action sexual harrassment case against an employer, brought by women workers at an iron ore mill in northern Minnesota. Excellent performances by Charlize Theron, Frances McDormand and woody Harrelson.
