In Angel Isle, author Peter Dickinson has returned to the world first seen in The Ropemaker. It is now 20 generations later. The magic that has protected the Valley has disappeared. Their homes, having been burned by the northern horsemen, cousins Saranja and Maja with Ribek, a baker, set out reluctantly for the Empire to find The Ropemaker and ask him to renew the protective magic that has hidden their homes. But the chief magician has disappeared, the council of magicians he left to oversee the Empire have gathered power into their own hands to form a single, soulless entity and are eliminating all rival magicians. There is magic everywhere, but only the gifted can control or even use it. Characters are well developed, the complex, multilayered story includes more heady explorations of love, time and magic

Mind reading isn't that easy - anyone else's mind is a wildly complicated place, and some are a lot more hidden than others . . .
