Wonderful writing, very well organized and told story; more or less autobiographical.

I fell in love with the first half of this book, but by the end I had lost interest and it was feeling old. The structure was unique with two alternating storylines and full of very colourful characters. Loved the author's dry wit. Set in Peru in the 50s, 18-year-old Mario falls in love with his aunt's 32-year-old sister and they eventually marry much to the dismay of Mario's large family. The second part of the novel is an intertwining series of radio soap operas written by an enigmatic scriptwriter named Pedro Comacho - these stories get crazier and crazier as they go along, as the writer himself sinks into madness.
