What a beautifully tragic love story! *Swoon*
Initially I wasn't sure about this movie, because sometimes subtitles don't allow for your complete immersion within the story. Thankfully it enhances the storytelling. Absolutely loved it.

Omg, this movie just kills me.... The acting, the actors are just superb. I love historic movies but this movie just makes me so sad inside. And the scene when she dances with the Dr..always melts me.

The romantic custom story with some historical view of the struggle of the efforts to bring enlightenment to Denmark.

based on a true story. I don't know the history well enough to say how accurate they tell the story, but the cast put in great performances.

watched it twice; nicely done historic portrait of changes in Denmark in the 1700's. All the actors did a stellar job in recalling the events of those days. I wish they would have expounded on the latter part of the movie when the next generation takes over. A must.
Thanks to the library for featuring it on the DVD's showcase in the recommended page.

Enjoyed a part of history I knew nothing about - now I understand how/when Denmark started 'liberal' attitudes. Good to great acting by all. English often spoken, but I still relied on subtitles despite them not lasting long enough on screen for me. Makes me want to visit the countryside.

A standout, poignant period piece brilliantly presented. An excellent cast led by the exquisite Alicia Vikander and the distinctive Mads Mikkelsen. Brilliant. FIVE STARS.

Caroline Mathilde: I'm trying to remember him. Johann. I have to tell you about him. About us. Why we did the things we did. My beloved children, you do not know me, but I am your mother. Perhaps you have never forgiven me. Perhaps you hate me. I hope not. I now know that I will never see you again, so I am writing to tell you the truth, before it's too late.

Johann Friedrich Struensee: Your majesty.

Caroline Mathilde: You recognized me.

Johann Friedrich Struensee: I would recognize you blindfolded.

Caroline Mathilde: But your costume is not very imaginative.

Johann Friedrich Struensee: I'm afraid I'm not very good at the masquerade.

Caroline Mathilde: I believe this is the one night when everyone can be themselves. *pauses* But you never remove your mask. Do you?

[From a bird's eye view atop a balcony after the play, Brandt and Struensee are seen discussing Rantzau's new wife, Sophie.]

Dr. Struensee: [referring to Rantzau] "As long as he's happy."

Brandt: "Yes, men have an odd ability to ignore reason when it comes to beautiful young women. [Pauses] 'Le Morte d'Arthur.' Have you read it? Thomas Malory."

Dr. Struensee: "I've heard of it."

Brandt: "King Arthur's knight, Sir Lancelot, has an affair with Queen Guinevere. The king finds out, orders both killed, and the kingdom falls apart. [Turns to face Struensee] You're a fool. I like you a lot. I don't want to mourn by your severed head."
