Certainly not his best work. My supposition would be that Mr. Koontz had a good short story, but whether to punish his publisher, editor, or to meet a contracted obligation, grabbed a thesaurus and filled in a 1/4 of the story with unnecessary overly wordy similes, and another 1/4 with the ramblings of a 12-year old female character. Neither of which added substance to the story, captivated the reader, or improved the suspense. It merely extended the story, and tortured the reader. If this is your first Koontz book, skip it, and move along to another in the Odd Thomas series, or try Watchers, Lightning, Intensity, or another that exemplifies his work as opposed to diluting it.
