An unforgettable film about a woman who stumbles upon a romantic letter stuffed inside a washed-up bottle, and who is at once determined to find the author, who ends up being a recently widowed shipbuilder.

Rated 5/10. A very average movie. The acting and overall storyline was okay, but the best part about it was Paul Newman.

The ending of the show was totally contrived. Who goes out in a storm with no life jackets on?

Lack of chemistry between main characters. Good to see Paul Newman. Movie okay, but lacked excitement.

I love Robin Wright; she is a phenomenal actress and you believe the emotions she conveys, almost seeing them behind her eyes. As always, she is spectacular here. MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE is a complex romantic drama, in that the villain is not a living, breathing person; the villain is grief, the grief that Garret, a small-town boat-builder, feels for the tragic loss of his wife. It stands in the way of progress in his life, even when confronted head-on by a woman who sought him out for the very reason that she can't be with him. There are layers to this film, which I don't often get to say about a film based on a Nicholas Sparks novel. Sure, it hits the same clicheed notes in the end (and if you've read Sparks or watched one of the many films based on his work, you know what I mean) and those are the areas that I find weak and dislike the most, but the initial moments of this film with Robin Wright researching diligently and infiltrating the tiny folksy town -- not to mention the relationship dynamics between the great Paul Newman (who plays Dodge, Garret's father) and just about anyone in the film -- are what drew me in and kept me interested. Again, I wasn't much for the ending; it was too constructed, too eloquent and pointed to feel genuine, but if you like that kind of thing, then I can see why some people go goo-goo over this film. Overall, MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE was a flawed but okay watch, one I wouldn't see again but I would recommend to certain audiences, depending on their tastes.

The screenplay of this movie is excellent but you won't notice it because it is that good. I didn't like the ending but then I found out that the story was, in a way, based on his father who lost his wife, spent years on his own, became engaged, and died a few days later when he feel asleep while driving.

Second time I've seen this movie and I loved it as much as the first time. I thought the acting was great on all levels with Costner grieving the loss of his wife and unwilling to let go, Newman playing the cranky father that also grieves, but is dying inside because his son can't let go and because of his own loss and then of course the love interest Wright, that tries to connect with Costner despite his loss and struggles to live with his demons as well. Very well written and exceptionally produced. Once of my all time favorite relationship movies. Hits on all points.

Well written romance/drama about learning to let go of loss, grief... moving on. Hoping to love again. Two lonely people serendipitously drawn together under sad and romantic circumstances. The true to life inter-personal relationships between Newman/Costner, Costner/Wright Penn, & Newman/Wright Penn are warm and genuine. The late, great Paul Newman was such a master at his craft... one of a kind. All three actors deliver strong performances. I hate the film's ending. :(
