Picking up from the end of Underwood, Pierce has grown to love and trust John, living with him in the Underworld as the embodiment of the Persephone myth. Her content life is shattered when Furies kill John, spurring her mission to bring him back to "life."
At the beginning of this novel, Pierce finally accepts her love for John and helps him run the Underworld—until he is killed by Furies. Pierce cannot accept his death (since he was supposedly immortal) and searches, on her own, for a way to revive him and restore order to the Underworld.
