It's always handy to start your foray into the off-the-grid life with a large pool of cash. Not to discount the skills they do learn and share- it's pretty impressive how they adapt and make technology work better for them. if you're into the high tech, hands-on, DIY life this book is a must read.

Potentially a bit "crunchy granola" for some people (the author tends to sound a bit new age at times), but a fascinating read because the author lives such a different life from the majority of North Americans. A good account of what life "off the grid" is like and the effort/choice involved to support such a life-style.
