You'll recognize some of the ideas, but the fantastic, unique setting and a great main character make this book an easy addition to your 'read soon' list.
This is a really solid action packed adventure. There are hints of the supernatural, genetically modified creatures, an interesting backstory, and lots of Native American details. This isn't a book about the main character being Apache, but it's also not a book that just throws out a single detail about her heritage and moves on with the story. Great fast read that keeps you hooked.
When Joseph Bruchac (who is both a prolific and fine writer) sat down to write this book, I like to think that he thought "Hmmm, what SF tropes should I include?". And then he couldn't decide so he put in ALL of them. There are elements of Buffy the Vampire Slayer slayers and vampires, cyberpunk, traditional monsters and spirits, genetically engineered monsters, ESP and more, all set in post-apocalyptic world where...... well you get the idea. The only trope that doesn't turn up are the Dragons of Pern, but their influence is apparent in book 2. What I really like about this book is the blend of Native American cultures and beliefs that tie this book together. It's an adventurous romp with a strong female lead - give it a go.
I enjoyed this!! At first I was skeptical at the title, but it was very cool to see its deeper meaning and its true historical namesake. Normally I can't take a lot of action all at once, but the author's narration kept me intrigued- especially with the small parts of Spanish here and there :) What I really loved though is how Joseph Bruchac slipped in a subtle but really, really enjoyable romance in there, with characters who had depth to it. (The twist on some of the Ones and seeing villains with depth was great).
This books was a classic two-star for me - a quick read that's enjoyable if you don't think too hard about it.
Oh my. It's like a post apocalyptic take on a superhero that's Native American. Very different unique premise that keeps the Native American theme running strong. I thoroughly enjoyed her active adventurers and the dilemmas that she had. Excellent descriptive tone with out being too wordy. I would highly recommend this for middle school and high school or's. It's like nothing you've ever read before. Definitely a sleeper hit.
