preety good

This is now one of my favorite celebrity-written books for kids and I don't generally enjoy books written by celebrities. It is an engaging mystery that celebrates teamwork and perseverance without feeling too preachy and has likeable, realistic characters, each with their own challenges. The author narrates the audiobook, also something I don't generally enjoy, but Spencer pulls it off. A good choice for grades 4-6, boys and girls alike.

Girl who just lost mother moves to small-town and tries to solve a mystery. She makes friends with a Spanish hard of hearing boy. It's a genuine mystery with action and lively characters. There was enough intrigue and suspects where you could try to figure it out yourself or just sit back and enjoy. Also a side plot was her relationship with her father which had to be adjusted now with her mom gone. This is a good solid read especially for girls, since she is so confident. It's written by Octavia Spencer (who was in the movie the help) and is another good strong role model especially for young black girls.
