Both an educational and entertaining approach to the subject of constellations. In the case of Orion, the author starts with facts about the stars, especially those that make up Orion, deep space objects, and the Hubble telescope. This constellation was originally the Mesopotamian hero Gilgamesh, only later did it get named after the Greek hero Orion. Orion's is one of the more detailed myths, and several other constellations get mentioned for their part in this. He was a great hunter, but his fate always ends with death because of his prowess. To be thorough the author mentions variations of the story as well as tales from other cultures. Both photographs and illustrations adorn these pages. Photos include images of the stars, as well as relevant historical objects and places. Additional resources can be found in the back. Between the fun facts, an interesting story, tips on finding the constellation, and a manageable size, each volume in this new series is perfect for a wide range of children. This includes both those that prefer non-fiction and fiction. Each constellation's story gets removed from the larger body of a culture's mythology to shine alone in its individual glory.
