The film is about a 10-year-old little boy growing up in the rural Laos. Because of the tragedy of the family, his grandmother declared that he was being cursed and brought bad luck to the family. During a local Rocket Festival, he tried to join the competition hoping to win the prize and at the same time rid him of his curse.
This is a heartwarming film and the little actor acts very well.

I don't usually like to have my heart warmed by a movie, but I make an exception for this one. The main characters are two adorable barefoot Loatian kids living in a hand-to-mouth society. The government say you gotta move today to make way for a dam - grab what you can carry and leave your houses and hike up this mountain to the nearest road where a truck will take you to your new home. So you do. The new home is a bust so you move on, the boy's father hoping to make it to the nearest town where he can get a job. On the way, they stay over in a village that is having a competition to build and fly a rocket, with a nice purse going to the one who can make their rocket fly higher than the others. Ahlo, the boy, decides he should build one, with the help of an eccentric boozer who actually knows something about explosives. I won't give away the ending, although you might be able to guess it. A wonderful account of people dealing matter of factly with poverty and superstition without any cloying sentimentality.

I loved this movie. Great performances from a pair of Laotian 10-yr-olds. This is an Australian production of a story set in Laos. It certainly raised my awareness of Hmong culture and language, and I learned about the aftermath of the Viet Nam War in Laos. Recommended.

in a countryside littered with unexploded US bombs, a Lao family displaced by dam construction searches for a new place to live after the promised new village does not materialize.

in their wanderings they come across a rocket festival which is both competitive and an attempt to poke the raid gods in the a**. in the end, the competition brings this fractured family together.

very good. interesting 'making of' feature.
