We read this as a family with kids ranging in age from 6-12, we chose this series after reading a review by another family that reads together loved the series and my youngest was begging to read a wolf book.... My oldest said Erin Hunter books are too sad and since this one was recommended by another family we came to read this series thereby walking right into a trap. There are rules in children’s books dear Dorothy Hearst!!! Rules! This book has made us thoroughly distraught, I took it upon myself to skip some words at parts that were just too sad and told my youngest it would get better, we discussed suspected deaths before they occurred... We knew there were three books, so no, our favorite characters won’t die... We were 1/3 of the way through the final book when I just had this terrible feeling, maybe our beloved characters won’t make it. I have not read the last chapter to my children yet, though I read ahead once I got that terrible feeling, and I’m really baffled. My solution, I have written notes in the margin to adjust the story. What Dorothy Hearst wrote here was really harsh and a very callous way to end the life of a main character, I’m disappointed and I’ve discussed the ending with my son to get his opinion on if I ought to adjust for the sake of his sisters. I wish the author would have left us some hope. I think the illusion of death where we can suspect and hope we are wrong rather than smacking us in the face with it would have been more appropriate and maybe helped us to feel less betrayed, that is how I intend to read the end to my girls.
