I made it more than half way through this book and had to stop simply because it is only an OK detective story that contains no real magic or supernatural elements. There is a great deal of talk about covens, potions, alchemy, blood magic and the like but none of that actually materializes in the story itself. I enjoy many urban fantasy authors such as Jim Butcher, Laurell K. Hamilton and Mark Del Franco, all of whom have written superb supernatural detective novels so I was greatly disappointed by "Dirty Magic." If you are going to stick the word "Magic" in the title you darn well should put some in the story.

As a detective novel this book is only moderately good. The characters are stereotypes and have stereotypical responses in every situation. Nothing that any character does surprises me in any way. For example, the police captain is named Captain Eldritch and he is your garden variety political hack and opposes the main character's development at every turn. You can find this sort of lazy and lame writing on any cookie cutter TV show across the world. Trust me, you can skip this one.

Right off the bat I want to say that this book was awesome. We get to know Kate an ex-coven member of one of the leading covens in the city of Babylon in the Cauldron. She has been a cop now for awhile pretty certain her past is the reason she is still a patrolman chasing down potion junkies. That is until she has a run in with a violent junkie who just happens to be an informant for a higher group of law enforcement the MEA, which she only learns after his death in her self defense. It is an exciting journey through reconciling her past, a friendly neighbourhood witch, old rival covens, new friends, and reluctant old ones. It was exciting, entertaining, well written, dynamic characters, and keeps you turning the pages for more! Well worth the time!

Couldn't finish the book - found the protagonist too tiresome. She is reactionary, overly emotional and like a rabid dog with her maternal instincts about her brother. There's very little likeable about her. It's a mystery why anyone would want her on their team - her characteristics make her more of a liability than an asset.
