"Simon Snow is the worst Chosen One who's ever been chosen. That's what his roommate, Baz, says. And Baz might be evil and a vampire and a complete git, but he's probably right.Half the time, Simon can't even make his wand work, and the other half, he starts something on fire. His mentor's avoiding him, his girlfriend broke up with him, and there's a magic-eating monster running around, wearing Simon's face. Baz would be having a field day with all this, if he were here -- it's their last year at the Watford School of Magicks, and Simon's infuriating nemesis didn't even bother to show up"--

I didn't know how much I wanted queer wizard stories until I read this book. Can't wait to read the sequel!

If you are one of the "Drarry" shipping Potterheads, this is essentially that.
Was decent. I wouldn't read it again, but then I don't really like Harry potter, so.... :P

All I have to say is what a dang good book. Yes, it's basically Harry Potter. Yes, that's kind of rude to do to Harry. BUT, one book is so much nicer than seven, and it really is a different storyline, so we can feel better about that. Also, just, I love this book. I can't even give a proper book review because I am just so pleased with it.

Fun and engaging and emotional and delightful. Yes, it's a lot like Harry Potter. But, it's more fun (so much word play and wit!) and the marginalized characters are represented canonically. Like, queer characters are outright queer and not just queer in innuendo, characters of color are described as being characters of color.

I enjoyed the book. I was a bit apprehensive at first when reading and had to take a couple breaks, but once you get into the middle it gets really good! I read the rest in a day no problem. It made me really interested in what other books Rowell had to offer (: I would recommend! 8.5/10

I found the HP parallels disorienting at first but this book was a fricking joy. Believe the hype.

This book is amazing! It's based on Harry Potter but a LOT better, with more diverse, fleshed-out characters. I especially liked that the book offered different perspectives and views on the magic community and other characters.
Unlike in the Harry Potter books there is no plain right and wrong, every character thinks they are doing what is best. Also, Voldemort doesn't really have a motivation, the Mage and the Humdrum, on the other hand, have clear and reasonable incentives.
Also, there are gay characters, which are not present in Harry Potter. And there are two characters who don't want to fight and be part of all the disputes of the magical world.
Then there is also the whole thing about Harry being so self-righteous and conceited. Different perspectives and more thoughts on behalf of the main character make this less of an issue in Carry On.
I can't say that J. K. Rowling was bad at world building, but she definitely wasn't the best. Rainbow Rowell pays a lot more attention to the relationship between magic and non-magic communities, which I found interesting, because J. K. Rowling just used forgetting spells for everything. Not to mention that her books always made people without magic sound stupid and lesser with the exception of Hermione's parents.
Also, Carry On questions the whole 'Chosen One' thing a bit, which makes for a nice break from the whole 'born to be this,' 'born to be that' cliché. And instead of just waving around a stick Simon and the other magicians use WORDS. Also, the whole dragons are actually protected? That was great.
And, last but definitely not least, Carry On has GOATS!!!

This surprisingly romantic, lusciously sardonic, magical vampire fantasy gets the blood pumping to my cranky old brittle heart better than most realistic romance stories I've read. Rowell does a superb job showing what it’s like to feel high on love while simultaneously feeling embarrassed by all of the awkward moments of new intimacy. I found myself rooting for the two seemingly mismatched lovers til the end and beyond. Pure joy.

I didn't expect to enjoy this as much as I did! Of course I loved Fangirl, but I was worried Carry On would be too similar to Harry Potter. I needn't have worried! While there is the familiar British boarding school for magic, the rest is different enough to keep anyone entertained. The way Rowell sets up the magic is FASCINATING. Spells are magic words to be discovered, based on vernacular and common sayings. And of course the romance between Simon and Baz was completely delightful! It warmed my heart very much to see them falling for each other, especially after reading about Cath's obsession in Fangirl. I'm glad that Rainbow Rowell wrote this one, and it makes for an excellent stand alone fantasy novel!

This book made me SO happy. I am person that rereads Harry Potter almost every year and I know I'm gonna come back to Carry On as well. I read it a month ago and I'm still thinking about it a lot!

"I feel his magic. At first it's a buzz in my fingertips, then a rush of static up my arm. I try not to squirm...The static in my arm settles into a heavy thrum, like electrical sparks catching into flames. The discomfort goes away, even though the licking, flaming feeling gets stronger. This I know what to do with: This is fire...I laugh, and it comes out more good-natured than I mean it to. 'Snow. I think I could cast a sonnet right now'...I'm so full of power, I feel like I can see without opening my eyes. Like I could go nova if I wanted to and have my own galaxy. Is this what it's like to be Simon Snow? To have infinity in your chest pocket?"

"I'm still humming with his magic, and it's been hours since he pulled his hand away. He's thrown spells at me before, but this was different. This was like being struck by benevolent lightening. I felt scorched clean. Bottomless. No, that's not right, not bottomless. Centreless. Like I was bigger on the inside. Like I could cast any spell--back up any promise. At first it was as if Snow was giving magic to me. Sending it to me. But then the magic was just there. It was mine, in that moment, everything that was his."
