This book is scholarly without being ponderous. As a first foray into probiotics, along with "The Gut", this is a very good way of being to understand the science of all that is going on down there.

Statements by the author, a well-respected epidemiologist, are referenced to peer-reviewed endnotes (that's what the little superscript numbers refer to). The book is well-written, with humour, and the author clearly indicates when his statements need further research (unlike the wheat belly, gluten crowd).

It's an entertaining read. The author has an interesting perspective - from his twin studies. Sadly, he often strays from what he knows, making assertions that are simply wrong. He's probably right in the broad thrust of his argument[s], but as this is written for a popular audience (i.e. without foot/end/notes), it's hard to distinguish his conjectures from what has been scientifically established, and how convincing that study was.
