This marvelous old movie tells an entertaining and thought-provoking story in which humans encounter the technology of an extinct alien race, and is fun to watch for its own sake. But for a modern viewer, it’s also fun to look for the science fiction trends this very influential film initiated. An intrepid cruiser captain leading his crew through encounters with aliens and philosophical quandaries, for example, will be familiar to Star Trek fans. As for the cast, Leslie Nielsen plays the stalwart hero, in the first phase of his acting career before he went on to become one of the world’s greatest comedy stars. And the Robbie the Robot created for this movie became a sort of a star himself, either as the same “character” or when the suit was re-used as other robots for several Twilight Zones and other productions. Last but not least, Forbidden Planet is a visually rich experience because it came from the era when color filming was still fairly new and colors were bright and vivid, and because the Disney studio loaned out some of its animators to create the film’s monster. It was a time when special effects were less of a technological feat and more of a work of art, making for a viewing experience quite different from modern science fiction. And adding to the alien mood, there’s the eerie, one-of-a-kind soundtrack produced entirely by analog electronic instruments. Forbidden Planet is one of those rare things which really is as good as you’ve heard it to be.

This is one of the seminal works of Science Fiction on film./ Observe how the career of Leslie Nielsen evolved from this, one of his early workings.

Watching this movie brought back memories of watching it as a kid. It showed what we thought space travel and alien planets was back then. Adults over 50 will reminisce but under 40 will be bored! Still love Robbie!

Lost the Oscar for Special Effects to the Ten Commandments, a worthy winner. Louis and Bebe Barron got rooked out of an Oscar nom for their transcendent electronic score because they weren't music union members.

VERY GOOD 1956 sci-fi film. Did see it back in the day when it came out - not sure how much of it I would have understood as a young lad - fun to see again.

One of the best sci-fi classic movies from the early years. Well worth watching.

Great old sci-fi film. Most sci-fi from this era is just about unwatchable, but this one is very well done for the time period.

Long before Big Bertha and the myth of the Deep Bore Tunnel, there was the ultra-sophisticated underground tunnel network which went through the Forbidden Planet, and must have been a real gas to ride! Great SF flick from yesteryear.

This movie is amazingly good! The sfx and story are way ahead of it's time! I can see where Star Trek and so many other movies much later have had influences from this film. Some of the ideas like force fields, ray guns, communicators etc., are amazing! And then there's Robby the Robot! Shades of the robot from Lost in Space!
Very cool movie!
