If you were to remove all of the scenes in this movie where the gorillas were present and just let Sigourney Weaver and Bryan Brown carry the story with their character portrayals - You'd be bored to tears in no time flat. I guarantee it.

It was especially Sigourney, as Dian Fossey (the gorilla-lady), whose performance just about ruined this movie for me. Instead of taking her character seriously, I found myself chuckling away at the amateur, bug-eyed way in which she portrayed strong emotion.

Anyway - I think that another, more competent actress should have been cast for the Fossey part. And, with that - Sigourney could go back to reappearing in yet another "Alien" sequel, which is a movie that I think she was well-suited for.

VERY GOOD 1988 film about Dian Fossey and her work protecting African gorillas, some of which she became rather familiar with/to.
Lots of fine cinematography, good romantic flavor - lots of fun cinema with those gorillas.

Director Michael Apted scores a winner with "Gorillas in the Mist". He is famous for such films as "Coal Miners Daughter" and "Gorky Park", but this may be his best work. The cinematography of the African jungle gorilla's is stunning. Sigourney Weaver is outstanding in a true story of anthropologist Dian Fossey travels to study the gorilla's in their native habitat. "Gorillas in the Mist" is fascinating from beginning to end. A truly fine film for the entire family!
