I liked this movie; but never read the book. With that in mind, seems to go into too much detail re: Watney's work colonizing Mars; planting potatoes and all that jazz. Too long, it could have wrapped up a little sooner than it did. I did not consider this a waste of my time.(husband did though)

"The Martian" DVD is excellent and the acting and the script kept me glued to each minute throughout the entire movie. Matt Damon, as well as the other actors, were all truly believable in their roles and I never knew what would unfold next. The filming was amazing and I felt like I was watching the experience unfold on Mars and there were many surprises too.
The movie clearly deserves five stars. ---- Joy and Grace

The problem (and it's a huge one for me, sorry) is he should have stayed there. I was thinking Robinson Crusoe. The first half was astounding, and I wanted more potatoes.

I was drawn into this movie from the start. It was very entertaining and scientific at the same time. It was captivating to follow fascinating to follow Mark through his challenges while stranded on Mars.

Completely unbelievable, and unrealistic, to such degree, that destroys premise of the story. Damon is as annoying as ever (to me), but otherwise acting is average.

an astronaut gets left alone on Mars with nothing but comic book science to save him, if you can believe it

In my opinion, I thought the movie was done very well. It has been a long time since I watched something that kept my interest throughout the whole movie. The meaning at the end of the movie was also powerful as it describes basic life. A well worth movie to watch.

What is the big deal about Matt Damon, anyhow? He's a real lousy actor. No charisma at all.

Based on the novel by Andy Weir

Mark Watney: They say once you grow crops somewhere, you have officially colonized it. So, technically, I colonized Mars. In your face, Neil Armstrong!

Mark Watney - "...But, consider this; I get to fly around like Iron Man. Let's go Iron Man."

Most of the best quotes are near identical to those from the book ( ) except the film added more earthly material at the end such as Watney addressed the students part 1 of 2:
Welcome to the Astronaut Candidate Program. Now pay attention, because this could save your life.
Trust me, I know what I'm talking about. Let me get a few things out of the way, right off the bat. Yes, I did in fact survive on a deserted planet by farming in my own shit. Yes, it's actually worse than it sounds. So let's not talk about that ever again.

Watney addressed the students part 2 of 2.
The other question I get most frequently is... "When I was up there, stranded by myself... "did I think I was going to die?" Yes, absolutely. And that's what you need to know going in because it's going to happen to you. This is space. It does not cooperate. At some point, everything is going to go south on you. Everything is going to go south and you're going to say, "This is it. "This is how I end." Now, you can either accept that...or you can get to work. That's all it is. You just begin. You do the math. You solve one problem... then you solve the next one. And then the next. And if you solve enough problems, you get to come home.
