This nonfiction picture book could easily be overlooked on library shelves with a call number in the 900's, but please seek it out and give it a read! Use it to celebrate storytelling and history, or to start conversations about immigration or the science and ecology of wildfires. It almost seems like a tall tale, until you learn that it is a true story!

Loved the quiet narrative and equally quiet pictures in this biography of the author/illustrator's grandfather.

Where do stories come from? From anywhere. Some of them are passed down from grandparents. In this breathtaking book, Rebecca Bond recreated her favorite story told her by her Papa, a true story that happened to him when he was 4. My 11-year-old daughter and I read the book together and marveled at this amazing tale of a union of humans and animals in a situation of a natural disaster.

Stunning illustrated story of a magical moment in history - humans and wild animals seeking safety together.
