“How many feelings can one heart hold?... Infinite, Luna thought. The way the universe is infinite. It is light and dark and endless motion; it is space and time, and space within space, and time within time. And she knew: there is no limit to what the heart can carry.”

Not all knowledge comes from the mind. Your body, your heart, your intuition. Sometimes memories even have minds of their own.

Add a CommentThis is a children's book that was highly recommended by a friend who helps elementary school children stage plays. I previewed the book one night before giving it to my grandchildren to read. The timing was not good; they had to return it because others had holds on it. They subsequently checked out the book and recently finished it. The girl loved it, the boy found it OK. It is a fun story, features female protagonists, and has almost a classic fairy tale story line. Creation myths play an important part in the story and I feel that some of it paraphrases the Genesis story. Of course, that's just IMHO.
Have your children read it, read it to them, read it to your friends' children. I only wish I could have read it with my grandchildren - curse you, Covid!
Fascinating and beautiful, really beautiful. Story focuses on love and kindness and overcoming terrible/terrifying things. I don't know why I picked it up, but it was hard to put down until I finished it!
hard to understand the first time, much better on the second read!
I really enjoyed reading this book. The characters are developed and the plot had twists that I didn't see coming. I recommend this book for anyone who enjoys fantasy with a basic good versus evil plot. Recommended for grades 4-9.
The magic in this book was so beautifully done. I truly enjoyed the characters and the twists and turns the plot took. It was almost like reading a folklore. I must say that this read more like a teen book than a J book, so I would recommend it to more advanced middle grade readers.
This book was one of my favorite reads of 2019. Kelly Barnhill weaves together multiple intriguing storylines beautifully!
This book is beautifully written. The imagery will make your imagination take flight, and the story is magical!
Kelly Barnhill is a truly gifted storyteller. This book reminds me of the fairytales that I read when I was a child and inspired me to become a writer. Much like the forest in the story, this book is filled with twists and turns. Of long standing truths and new discoveries. The characters will touch your heart, or fill it with dread, or remind you of someone you may have met along your own journey. You'll be thinking of them long after you've read the last page.
I really enjoyed this one. It reminds me of the darkness found within fairy tales, with its portrayal of sacrifice in the Protectorate, but with enough lighter elements to appeal to children. Recommended for children aged 10-12 who enjoy fantasy and whimsy, with some darker elements and themes.
This is a really fun title with atmosphere that doesn't stop!
