Florence, August of 1466: Lorenzo de' Medici, the 17-year-old heir to the city's de facto leadership, foils a murderous plot against his father and saves his family from a coup d'etat. This program recounts the event and its long-term aftermath, including Lorenzo's unprecedented authority over Florentine business and society as well as further rivalries and violent attempts to neutralize the Medici dynasty. Also depicted: the rise of the zealous young monk Girolamo Savonarola and his divisive brand of religious fundamentalism, which eventually achieved what assassinations could not.
