The Medici, Godfathers of the Renaissance
Power Vs. TruthStreaming Video - 2009
In 1537, Cosimo I - emerging from a different branch of the Medici family tree than the earlier Cosimo - became the new Duke of Florence. This program relates his rise to power, which was propelled by vast ambition as well as a well-founded obsession with his own security. The film also examines Cosimo's connection to Vasari, one of the first art historians, and the relationship that developed between later generations of Medici dukes and the scientific community, most notably Galileo. Viewers learn how the Medici family ultimately had to choose between Renaissance ideals and the growing fundamentalism of Catholic doctrine.
