In 1959, an unassuming Spanish pianist won the Liverpool Philharmonic International Competition-and, soon after, astounded the music world in a debut with the London Symphony Orchestra. This documentary celebrates and assesses Joaquin Achucarro's half-century career. It features interviews with Placido Domingo, Zubin Mehta, Simon Rattle, Lucille Chung-and, last but far from least, the pianist himself. With great candidness and a display of charm and sentiment that echoes his musical approach, Achucarro discusses his youth, influences, and playing style. "The piano, our friend and enemy, is capable of infinite sounds," he says, providing several demonstrations of that capability interwoven with archival footage of past performances.
