Your brain is composed of more than a thousand million neurons. Specific neuron groups work together to enable you to reason, experience feelings, remember things, and understand the world. Your brain has three major components: cerebrum, cerebellum, and brainstem. The outside portion of the cerebrum is the cerebral cortex, or gray matter, which generates your most complex intellectual thoughts. The cerebrum has left and right sides that communicate through a broad band of nerve fibers. Grooves and folds increase the cerebral surface area, allowing your abundant gray matter to fit inside the limited space of the skull. Although your cerebral hemispheres look alike, they help you to do different things. Researchers believe that in most people the left side may be more influential in shaping reasoning, language, and scientific and mathematical skills. The right side seems to have more influence over art, music, insight, and imagination.
