Originating as a Korean martial art, taekwondo became an Olympic event in 2000 and is now practiced in more than 200 countries. This program explains taekwondo, focusing on its three basic disciplines of sparring, poomsae (patterns), and breaking. The video shows attack and counterattack movements; foot, arm, and leg techniques; acrobatics; and more. Features of the tatami mats and garments worn are also considered, along with general rules for sparring, poomsae, and demonstration, all while touching on the philosophy behind taekwando.
