Taking office after Kennedy's assassination, Lyndon Johnson inherited an administration that was committed to a war half a world away. Eventually, the weight of that burden brought America to its knees and toppled LBJ's presidency. This A&E Special offers an extraordinary inside view of a presidency in crisis and the personal torment of a man torn between completing the task at hand and the unbearable cost of doing so. Much of the material in this revelatory program comes from formerly secret audiotapes Johnson made of phone conversations, discussions, and cabinet meetings. In them, Johnson, Cyrus Vance, Robert McNamara, and other key administration officials discuss strategies, argue the pros and cons of continuing the fight or accepting defeat, and debate the mounting domestic problems associated with the war.
