Offered in 0 more formatsOn 22 October 2002, a large gang of heavily armed terrorists seized a theater in the heart of Moscow, holding more than 800 people hostage, as they demanded the withdrawal of Russian troops from Chechnya, their homeland. Four days later, the siege ended in a tragedy that shocked the world as 130 of the hostages died when the Russian security forces pumped a powerful knockout gas into the theater. All 42 of the terrorists were shot dead when the security forces stormed the building. Chechnya, a land-locked mountainous country 1,000 miles South of Moscow, has been struggling for independence from Russia for 200 years. Conquered first by the Russians in the mid-19th Century, Chechnya was always one of Russia's most troublesome territories. Its fiercely independent and warlike people, most of whom are Muslims, bitterly resent their Russian overlords. Following years of escalating violence, it fell to the former Russian President Vladimir Putin (the current Prime Minister) to push back the rebels, strip Chechnya of all authority and declare that the country would be ruled directly from Moscow once again. But the Chechen rebels, many of them hiding out in the mountains and forests, vowed to fight on - this time through a terror campaign. As Russian troops remained in Chechnya, many outrages ensued. Then in Beslan, on September 1 2004, the world watched in horror as 400 people (most of them children) were killed when Russian troops stormed a school seized by Chechen terrorists. But every time the Russians manage to capture or kill a leading Chechen terrorist, there is always another to take his place. So it seems that, unless and until Russian forces are withdrawn and there is a diplomatic breakthrough, the battle will continue.
