From a craft point of view, the stories in this anthology are uneven. Still, this is a collection that as a totality will imprint its dark, aggressively feminist and gritty descriptions of the slums in Buenos Aires on the reader. Many of the images and themes are hard to take; for example, in the title story.
In interviews, Mariana Enriquez readily admits to her fascination with the dark side. Almost all stories touch on death and the living dead. Ghosts abound, including the spirits of Argentina’s Disappeared.
My favorites: “Spiderweb” (published in The New Yorker last year) and “No Flesh over Our Bones.”
