In 1979, four teenage boys from an elite private school sexually assault a fourteen-year-old classmate, filming the rape. Not long after, the tape goes missing, and the classmate suspected to be the thief is murdered. In the investigation that follows, one boy turns state's evidence and two of his peers are convicted--but the ringleader escapes. A decade later, one of the assailants--moody, angry, unrepentant Fritz McCabe--has been released from prison, only to have a copy of the missing tape arrive at his home with a ransom demand. The McCabes call Kinsey Millhone for help; but even as she's drawn into their family's drama, Kinsey begins to suspect that a vicious sociopath with a grudge against her is leaving traces of himself for her to find....

I din't like this either, and didn't finish it. I didn't like anybody in the book, though I've been a fan of the series since "A". Sue Grafton died from cancer shortly after the book came out, and it may well be that she was ill and not at the height of her powers when she wrote this one. But how does that explain the poor editing? Was she unwilling or unable to work with an editor? What about the anachronisms?

My dislike may have been compounded by the reader, whose tone added to my dislike of the characters. And I suppose that I also have changed since the young person I was when I started the series; I'm not interested any more in spending time with characters I don't like, especially fictional ones.

Final thought: I also really didn't appreciate the sexual events on the video tape being taken at face value as harmless, and Kinsey's goal being to protect one of the male participants. It was strange for me in a female heroine.

Just could not get into this book. Makes me wonder who wrote it!!

I've really enjoyed this series, but the mystery got somewhat lost in everything else that was happening, and the flashbacks got confusing.

Could hardly complete it. It drags on and rehashes again and again. ugh.. don't bother.

Grafton hasn't lost the plot, she has complicated it mercilessly, with threads about a decade-old crime perpetrated by teenagers; a homeless freeloader who is imposing on dear Henry; and her cousin Anna who is having an affair with one of Kinsey's former lovers. All wander in and out of the book in a way that becomes not confusing but tedious. I'm happy we are at the end of the alphabet.
