From the early days as hired muscle for the Italian and Jewish mafias, tunneling into bank vaults in the '50s and '60s, to the legendary truck heists and bank stick-ups in the '70s, Montreal's Irish mafia-otherwise known as the West End Gang-has managed to pull off some of the most daring and logistically complicated robberies and smuggling operations in Canadian history.

Flipping through the pages, all I was thinking was how much better this book could have been. The narrative is really weak - in fact, it reads more like an encyclopedia of crime in Montreal. And several chapters have nothing to do with the West End Gang; discussing the bikers wars of the late 90s and Vito Rizzuto. There were some interesting stories, like how Montreal was considered the bank robbing capital of North America in the 50s and 60s, but like q22 stated, it just lacked personality.

Well, I don't know Montreal well, but this book tells of more murders in the past 60 years than I ever imagined.

Well researched, organized and written, but it is more like an accounting of the score than an outline of how the gangs worked - the dynamics of organized crime. I wasn't disappointed, I expected a little more personality.

Easy read, more about organized crime in Montreal than just the Irish gangs, good money in crime if you survive long enough
