Before Downton Abbey, there was Abingdon Pryory, the elegant country home of the Grevilles-a titled English family who, along with their servants, see their world turned upside down when England goes to war. Once their well-kept lawns and whirling social seasons give way to the horrors of World War I, no one, upstairs or downstairs, is left untouched. For fans of sweeping historical fiction, the reissue of Phillip Rock's New York Times bestseller The Passing Bells is a breathtaking family saga not to be missed.

I couldnt agree LESS with the previous comment! Slow??

I found this story riveting, the writing quite beautiful and the details fascinating and quite engaging. The book flowed well, the characters were vivid. I found myself in tears at the end.
It also happens to be an excellent way to learn about the First World War.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone!

Having never heard of the writer before I must say Im surprised he isnt more widely known.

I was quite disappointed in this book. The writing is heavy and the pacing slow. Too many details and unimportant scenes, in my opinion.

Nice that this was reprinted so that all of of us Downton Abbey fans could re-discover it. I bet Julian Fellowes read this & thought, I could make this more soap-opera-y & more everything. I thought the WW1 scenes went on too long.
