"Christine "Lady Bird" MacPherson is a high school senior from the "wrong side of the tracks." She longs for adventure, sophistication, and opportunity, but finds none of that in her Sacramento Catholic high school. LADY BIRD follows the title character's senior year in high school, including her first romance, her participation in the school play, and most importantly, her applying for college" -- IMDb.

Laurie Metcalf and Saoirse Ronan excel in this mother-daughter coming-of-age tale. The rebellious and self-centered Saoirse is in her senior year at the local Catholic high school. She yearns to leave Sacramento's small-town atmosphere, her economically strapped family, and especially her mom. A perceptive nun suggests the theater as a way of channeling her frustration, which opens the door to dating, a new set of friends, and the possibility of college in the East.

There are many fine films that deal with this subject, this dimension. This one is drab. Though there is clearly intent from the actors, these are redundant portrayals of the classic characters found in this bend of cinematic realism. . Really nothing new or special. No Art. It's got the fingerprints of directoritis.

Don't know if it's wonderful or not, couldn't understand dialogue, no subtitles either, gave up.

My partner and I stopped watching this film after about 25 minutes. Not interesting nor feeling like there was any point or justification to continue spending more time with this film.

I do like cast for most part, I do agree that this film was over-rated. I was disappointed in the story line was very basic & predictable, which I dislike. It Left me bummed that I rented it.

An overrated, boring movie with good performance.

I was intially drawn to the film by seeing a cross in the corner of the cover for the movie - and seeing in the soundtrack that Christian hymns were included. Being a Christian always moved by any movie that has a good meaning, this seemed like a good fit with a good premise. I must say I thought the movie would be better. That it wouldn't 'merely' be a sort of teen angst story, as touching as it was and as much as it did involve other meaningful characters, of course. I also didn't digest the quite rapid pace of the movie very well. I thought it was unique that it would have a tear-jerking scene than immediately switch gears to humour, but it didn't make for an ideal feel to the movie. All in all, I enjoyed the experience and certainly wasn't bored, but as I mentioned I think I felt the film held more promise than it delivered. Also I recommend checking out a Catholic bishop's review and commentary of the film by searching "Bishop Barron Lady Bird" on YouTube. I thought the strong presence of Catholicism in the movie was cool and am okay with a teenager's views not necessarily being pro-religion at that stage of her life, but as Bishop Barron mentioned - the peace of a church on Sunday morning ends up being something of a revelation for her towards the end. Man, I'm rusty at making good library reviews, lol. (My review of my review is that my writing was pretty spacy and pretty spotty. My attempt to plug my faith maybe threw off the rhythm. Now I might self-destruct from over-analysis. Peace!) :D :D

I am amazed at the many negative and/or lackluster reviews of this movie. Ronan was great as the main character, as long as we recognize that Lady Bird is an uncertain teenager, not the fountain of all wisdom. In addition, her boyfriend in the movie (Kyle) is kind of an immature pretentious jerk (see: Zinn, hand-rolled cigarettes, prom, et cetera). The relationship between Lady Bird and her mother was well-performed, even if the communication is frustrating. I think some reviewers might have missed the point about Sacramento (or anyone's hometown, for that matter): you may want to escape, but it'll still be part of your heart. Let's call this movie: 4 out of 5 stars.

Like others have mentioned, this movie was definitely overrated, following a rebellious high school girl who has arguments/problems with her family (mostly her mom). She goes through things and learns lessons from mistakes that most of us have probably made at one point or another. I enjoyed it mainly because of the likeable cast, but not the story-line.

Many inquiring and humorous quotes have been posted in IMDb. Many thanks to the contributors. The first quote listed in the site hits the spot on the relationship between many teens and their parents (added three lines* for full context):
Lady Bird: I wish that you liked me.*
Marion: Of course I love you.*
Lady Bird: But do you like me?*
(Conversation continued as the first quote in IMDb page)
Marion: I want you to be the very best version of yourself that you can be.
Lady Bird: What if this is the best version?
