Can a secret be kept forever? Five years ago, Shannon Astor left the beautiful high-mountain country of West Texas as a single mother. She was desperate for a fresh start and a way to keep the secrets of her past buried. It almost worked. Until a chance to make a better life for her daughter leads her right back home. To the very place of the past betrayals. But it also leads Shannon to horse-trainer Jack McGowan--her handsome high-school nemesis, now a widowed father. His daughter looks so startlingly like her own that Shannon can't help but question the circumstances surrounding her daughter's birth. Wary of each other's intentions, Shannon and Jack reluctantly join forces to untangle a deep mystery that swirls around Shannon's parents, a lost Spanish treasure, and a legendary black stallion. If Shannon can learn to entrust her secrets to the man falling in love with her, the truth just might set her free.

The second in Coble's contemporary Christian/romance/suspense Lonestar series, Lonestar Secrets follows the story of a single mother whose life is turned upside down when she returns to her childhood home as the town's new veterinarian. When Shannon returns home, she struggles to reconcile her hurt over past wounds inflicted by Jack with the compassion he shows his daughter, his horses – and her. With fires closing in, a long-lost treasure and a magnificent stallion, Shannon and Jack quickly find themselves thrown together. Will they allow God to work in their lives and find healing, redemption, and love for them both?
As usual, Coble expertly handles complex family relationships, as well as weaving a mystery that will keep you guessing. Redemption and love alleviate the sometimes heartbreaking scenes, but Coble always makes sure to conclude her novels satisfactorily and with more than a smidgen of hope. Another thing I really enjoy about this series, in particular, is that the characters from the other books do appear in each story. You are able to follow up and see the characters you've come to love grown and mature in each sequel – even if it is in the background.

This is one of the worst books I've read. It's like the author is trying to put every scenario she ever thought of in one book, thinking it might be the only one ever published. Unicorns, murder, baby switching, secret treasures, horse thievery, kidnapping, it just goes on and on. I won't read another one.
