A Brooklyn couple has always known that their four-year-old son is more interested in fairy tale princesses than toy cars. But when his preschool director points out that his gender-nonconforming play may be more than a phase, the couple is forced to rethink their roles as parents and spouses as they apply for him to go to a private kindergarten in New York City.

Like so many movies about people who are different, the focus is on the wrong characters. The title is A Kid Like Jake, but Jake is barely in the movie. We hear him, sometimes we see the top of his head, but we never actually see him playing with other children. It's more about the parents who are dealing with his gender issues. In past movies about LGBTQ folk, the focus is often on the people concerned about "what did I do to make you this way," rarely showing real concern for the major character. I wanted to like this so much, but I just didn't. The performances, overall, are pleasant, and it has a New York attitude to it, but I wanted Jake's point of view, not the parents.' Octavia Spencer is quite good in this, but then, isn't she always good?

This movie had an all-star cast. This was the first time I saw Jim Parsons playing a father in any movie that he has ever done in his career. This movie was good it had a lot of twists and turns. Overall Claire Danes and Jim Parsons had some real chemistry in this movie. The only thing I can say in this movie is that this movie is just about trying to figure out what is best for Alex and Greg's child Jake. This was also the first time I have seen Octavia Spencer take on an LGBT role in any movie. Plus this is the second time that Jim Parsons and Octavia Spencer were in a movie together. The first movie they did together was Hidden Figures. However they have collaborated three times together in their acting careers. The first in an episode of the TBBT, second in a movie called Hidden Figures and the third in this movie a Kid like Jake.

The acting was not very good, the characters are not very likeable, and the writing was mediocre. Still, this is a thinking person's movie. Does the mother contribute to her sons "gender fluidity"? Does Disney? Does the lesbian director of his preschool have an agenda to make her charges gender fluid? If his father to blame because he doesn't teach the kid to play catch? IF the mother loves her son just as he is, why is so so freaked out when other people notice he prefers tutu's to WWF costumes? Many people think they are okay with drag queens, but if they had to accept their five-year-old son being limited and rejected because he wanted to be a drag queen, would they really take it well? Not for date night. Not a popcorn and giggles movie.

Drama prompted by today's current issue of gender roles among children. Questions of how caring parents react and what's the best way to raise children are explored. Jim Parsons and Claire Danes are fine in their roles, and Octavia Spenser plays the school advisor who has some perspective due to her own sexual orientation. There are real emotions here, and some questions answered though not sure I completely believed the satisfying ending.

An interesting presentation of parents coming to terms with the fact that their preschool child is transgendered. The movie actually focuses on the parents' reactions and emotions, rather than those of the child - though the child's outbursts occur in the background. Character development could have been better. Claire Danes has played stronger roles. Jim Patterson stepped out of his "Sheldon" role quite well though his character could also have been a little more developed. An okay movie that could have been better developed. The premise is a current social topic, so relevant.
