Never underestimate a librarian. Comfortably padded and in her middle years, Shona McMonagle may look bookish and harmless, but her education at the Marcia Blaine School for Girls has left her with a deadly expertise in everything from martial arts to quantum physics. It has also left her with a bone-deep loathing for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, that scurrilous novel that spread scandalous untruths about the finest educational institution in Edinburgh. Her skills, her deceptively mild appearance, and her passionate loyalty make Shona the perfect recruit for a new and interesting project: Time-travel to Tzarist Russia, prevent a gross miscarriage of romance, and - in any spare time - see to it that only the right people get murdered. It's a big job, but no task is too daunting for a Head Girl from Miss Blaine's.

It's silly, so go in with that in mind, and keep in mind that Shona thinks she's the smartest in the room, which, um, isn't quite right. But it's fun and quite ridiculous. A definite unusual read, and makes one wonder what a Scotswoman would sound like speaking Russian

It begins as a witty, quirky romp through time in Russia. No explanation of how and she's not told exactly what she has to do so she "wings it". Halfway through it takes a very annoying turn. One murder after another and she can't see the obvious. It was all I could do to finish the book. Never again.

Shona is sent on an unknowing mission through time to Russia. Armed with her loyalty to her alma mater Maria Blaine School for Girls and her disdain for the misinterpretation of the school in the "Prime of Miss Jean Brodie" she uses her keen wit and martial arts skills to discover her ultimate mission. The whole premise seemed, at first, silly and fanciful. However, Wojtas own wit, humor, and artistic imagination kept me thoroughly entertained. After almost being drowned in the river she said, "I covered up the worst of the damage with my pelisse, which had fallen off when I was propelled into the water. Had I been at home, I would certainly have reported the matter and would probably have booked a therapeutic massage, but I was on a mission with a deadline........" Different and delightful!
