The Secret Power of Embracing Emotions at Work

"A visual exploration of how to embrace emotion at work and become more authentic and fulfilled while staying professional. When it comes to emotions at work, there's rarely a happy medium. In some offices, your boss might send snaps of her weekend getaway in Vegas, or your coworker might send twenty texts about how Susan ate his clearly labeled lunch...again. Other offices are buttoned-up emotional deserts, where crying is only allowed in the bathroom and you suspect your coworkers might be robots. Either extreme hurts employee health and productivity. Liz Fosslien and Mollie West Duffy take a charming and deeply researched look at how emotions affect our professional lives and how we can navigate emotions at work. The modern workplace can be an emotional minefield (Do I shake my boss's hand or give her a hug? Did I forget to mute my phone on the conference call?) filled with unwritten rules. As our jobs become more collaborative, complex, and stressful, effectively embracing emotion is more important than ever"--

With emotional intelligence and psychological safety in the workplace popping up on my radar more frequently these days, I plucked this book from the shelf when I spotted it at my local library. As a manager, I struggle to balance emotional aspects of my work and my team's work nearly every day. This book has so much helpful information. It's easy to understand and has many thoughtful suggestions to implement. The authors refer to other resources if the reader is interested in a deeper dive on the topics covered. No matter your position, this book gives you practical tools to improve your workplace. Highly recommended for managers and aspiring managers. In the right setting with the right discussion leader, this book could be a great team read or a great discussion book for leaders from multiple organizations.

I really like that there are illustrations throughout the book. Some of them just make me stop and laugh out loud! I love that! The authors Liz and Mollie talk about how it's okay to be an emotional person. Emotions are good and when you try to stop them, you really aren't being yourself. Of course don't be overly emotional, but do have a balance.
