"Furious and fun, the first book in this bold, new science fiction adventure series follows a ragtag group of adventurers as they try to find a legendary ship that just might be the key to clearing their name and saving the universe"--
A washed-up treasure hunter, a hotshot racer, and a deadly secret society. They're all on a race against time to hunt down the greatest warship ever built. Some think the ship is lost forever, some think it's been destroyed, and some think it's only a legend, but one thing's for certain: whoever finds it will hold the fate of the universe in their hands. And treasure that valuable can never stay hidden for long ... -- from back cover.

The Good: Uses complete sentences with acceptable punctuation.

The Bad: Unlikeable, selfish protagonists. Attempts to mix magic with sci-fi (no, I won’t use “science fiction” with this title), by making up a currently undiscovered gland in everyone’s brain, with no accompanying explanation of how it remained undiscovered for so long, or why, the highly visible, nearly universal abilities it grants were not commonly known. They (author’s preferred pronoun) choose a word that sounds vaguely biological (cardioid), but has no corresponding meaning for this imaginary gland. They then misappropriate a medical term (dystocia), that means difficult childbirth, to name a condition which makes the person unable to “spark” their fingers to use magic. Yes, this is how they propose to cast spells, by generating sparks with your fingers. The plot lines felt very derivative. I was unable to read to the end of the 2nd chapter. The author claims to also write horror fiction; I was certainly horrified by this!

I was unable to get past the first three or four pages. From other comments, maybe I quit too soon? But I have so many books to read I didn't read enough in those first few pages to make me want to invest the time to read more.

Started reading and was "oh crap, it has magic", but decided to keep reading for a bit to see how it went (I burned out on fantasy/magic a long time ago). Didn't regret it. Has an interesting blend of magic with technology that seemed fairly balanced. Story was interesting. I recommend it.

I had so much fun reading this! The mixture of a sci-fi space opera with a world where most humans have magic of one form or another really held my attention. The characters were diverse and well written, the action was explosive and fast paced, and the intrigue was on point. Highlights include a hot shot female race car driver who can magically connect her mind to the inner workings of her car, and has tattoos that change colour to reflect her mood (that she also uses for self defense in a special form of martial arts); an intense survivor of a world destroyed by war who has a giant mechanical suit of armor that follows her around like a puppy until she needs it to do battle in space; and the high stakes treasure hunt that leads a rag tag group of salvagers throughout the galaxy, fighting against a mysterious enemy all the way. I don't say this often, but I would totally watch a TV show of this! Cannot wait to read the sequel and find out what happens next.

Hard to get into the story--it seemed to be about car racing. Then about page 40 it picked up and got very interesting. Ships called Him, space travel, a non-magical person as a handicapped loner, lesbian affair. Then I skipped a few pages when the details of driving or fighting got tedious (really a magic battle that goes on for 8 or 9 pages?). Overall, an author I will read again, but only when I'm looking for something a bit odd.
