A fitting end to Avengers with current cast. Yes, it is long and yes, I'll view it more than once while checked out, because there are bits and pieces I surely missed. Since I managed to view this without seeing spoilers I'll do the same and not speak in depth. What I can tell you is everybody go... Read More »

SPOILERS TO FOLLOW

While I think this movie is good, even great, I don't think it's as good as Infinity War which I felt had a more cohesive narrative. Additionally, Infinity War had a tone of urgency throughout the film which gave it more excitement than I felt from Endgame. On the contrary, the first hour or so of Endgame felt like a depressing slog until they finally got to the part where they plan out the "time heist" to go back in time to acquire the Infinity Stones and reverse Thanos' mass genocide of half the universe in the previous movie.

While I have gripes with the movie that I'll get into in a bit, I think Avengers: Endgame serves as a mostly satisfying culmination to over a decade of Marvel movie storylines coming together. I found the conclusions to the arcs of the MCU "big 3" of Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor to be satisfying and overall found this movie to be passable. At its best, Endgame is a competent love letter to MCU fans complete with the comedy that Marvel films are known for and fan service. At its worst, Endgame is a flawed film but not flawed enough to be an embarrassing disaster.

Some of my random takeaways:

- I kind of liked that the film subverted my expectations by killing Thanos in the first fifteen minutes of the film. However, because the plot delved into time travel mechanics, the villain of this film would end up being a slightly younger, less fleshed out Thanos from an alternative timeline as opposed to the deeply complex Thanos that we knew in Infinity War. One of Marvel films' biggest and relatively consistent weaknesses is their generic villains with weak narrative motivations like ruling the world (with notable exceptions like Killmonger from Black Panther and the aforementioned Thanos from Infinity War).

- I don't know why Captain Marvel was in this movie and it looked like the Russo Brothers didn't either. Speaking as someone that doesn't read the comics, I assumed that she would be in this film because she had an integral role in a Thanos-related storyline in the comics. But she was shoehorned into this film and was forced out about as soon as she appeared only to not come back until the end. I hoped that Captain Marvel would be like Doctor Strange for me in that I liked her more in the ensemble film than her solo film. Alas, that was not the case and if anything, her mere overpowered existence in this movie with her singlehandedly demolishing Thanos' army and overpowering Thanos himself slightly dampened the impact of Tony Stark's sacrifice.

- They essentially re-did the scene with Thanos killing Gamora from Infinity War but replaced them with Hawkeye and Black Widow. It's not a narrative gripe but it stuck out to me.

- As I mentioned earlier, the conclusion of the arcs for Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor were great to me. Captain America going back in time to be with his former lover felt earned if you've followed his cinematic journey since his first solo film. Iron Man sacrificing selflessly sacrificing himself to kill Thanos brings his character arc from being a narcissistic jerk to a hero around to full circle. Thor seemingly joining the Guardians of the Galaxy was great and something I hope to see them follow up on due to Chris Hemsworth actually being a funny actor.

Overall, I think Endgame is a passable, albeit flawed movie that brings a satisfying conclusion to the first decade of Marvel films. It's not perfect but if you're an MCU fan, I think you will mostly be happy with this movie.

A great close to an incredible arc. Now if they do the same with X-men that would be very interesting.

I think infinity war is more interesting than this one. Too much going back in time, the movie feels much dragging and longer. Maybe it has to be done that way to reclaim the victory that the superheroes had totally lost in the infinity war. Still, I think the battle isn’t quite heroic that all superheroes gang up against one enemy and play going back in time trick to reclaim the victory. Iron Man is done in this movie, but I don’t think it gives any excitement or surprise to the movie. I think Marvel plan to bring him back in another movie. It seems like the common way now in Marvel movies. Money maker.

It really is not that good of a movie. Very long and tedious, and could have easily been shortened by half and not lost anything.
But hey, it is the ending to a long string of Avengers flicks.

Everybody is in this movie. Everybody! I'm pretty sure your mom is in this movie. It's three hours long and yet it doesn't have time to answer the burning question, "What is up with Hawkeye's haircut?" And "Why is Hawkeye still in these movies?"

My rating is based on my grandson's age 14 and 16 and son-in-law. They all really enjoyed this movie. Myself it's mainly special effects entertainment. Far too much in modern film. And I might add North American TV. It's no wonder we are living in a world we live in.

I look forward to the next installment of GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY with "Fat Thor" added to the time.

ULTIMATE.

Worth my wait to watch it—with all the Avenger-ness I wanted to get me on my feet.

Quite the journey, from the beginning till now. What a story.
