When Aidan Became a Brother is a light in this world!! A beautiful ode to all the young human beings who've had to work harder to make the world see who they truly are. If you want a picture book that teaches your child to be brave in their truth and has dazzling illustrations, this is it!

This book is a delight. Aidan's parents made some mistakes when he was born - they thought he was a girl! Oops! - but Aidan's helped them to make those mistakes right... and now he's going to be a big brother. He can't wait ... and he's going to try his best to make sure his new baby feels comfortable however they grow up.
Written by a trans author, this book tells a story about trans kids in a positive, affirming, and informative way. If you work with, live with, or respect kids in any way whatsoever, this is a book for you to share with them right now.

Another great picture book to add to your Pride display. The story is about a little trans boy named Aidan and how he excitedly awaits the arrival of his younger sibling. He hopes to be a great big brother and helps his parents prepare for the new arrival by decorating the baby's room. The book has a lovely art style and is keen to point out the many different ways to express gender and the importance of not assuming one's gender.

Sweet, and thoughtful.

"When Aidan Became a Brother" felt very complete to me. It talked about the journey to transition for young Aidan, it talked about Aidan's worries for his new younger sibling, the plot felt developed and supportive, and the art was on point. A very good story for families that may be experiencing a similar situation or want to reinforce non-conforming gender standards in their home.

Let’s also celebrate a local student, gaining this type of status, and being able to see his own book, in his old library system!

Aidan, who wasn't always called Aidan, asserts and discovers himself in this gentle tale of a family preparing for a new child. Transgender issues are covered in a low-key way that shows family and community acceptance as well as some social interaction that isn't entirely positive. But the family is supportive, learning from each other, and is ultimately ready to accept the new child without bothering to have a gender reveal so much as just a simple welcome home.

The illustrations are bright and show a range of actions and emotions as Aidan is depicted as rebellious, as an amateur barber, as a Pig Pen cosplayer, a super happy kid, a member of a fun community, a shy and withdrawn kid around a nosy hardware store clerk, and as an essential part of a growing family. And the narrative covers the territory with positive charm as well as some of the realities of going your own way.

A great story for anyone, even nosy hardware store clerks. Perhaps especially nosy hardware store clerks.
