Old Yeller comes to Travis's family as a stray. At first Travis detests him. With his father far away on a cattle drive, Old Yeller helps Travis take care of his family and Travis grows fond of him. This is a heartwarming tale of family and loyalty.
They called him Old Yeller because of his dingy yellow coat. Travis couldn't stand the look of Old Yeller. He thought the dog was ugly and he didn't like the fact that the dog stole their food. Old Yeller works hard to keep the family together while papa is away on a long cattle drive. Soon enough Old Yeller is capable of protecting Travis. But can Travis protect Old Yeller?

the story of a love between a boy and his dog. a really special dog. warning: this one has a tragic ending.
A powerful coming-of-age book about a boy and his dog. Beautifully written. It details a family's survival in rural Texas post civil war.
