I have to say that I didn't enjoy this book very much. But, I ❤️ Haddix and her writing style, so I have faith that the rest of the series will be great 👍🏻

Once I started it I couldn't put it down. If you enjoyed this book and are eager for more you would like the rest of the series.

Good, fast-paced start to the series. Raises important issues of the value of life and personal identity, as well as social responsibility and government overreach.

I adored this series when I first read it in early middle school; I'd recommend it for kids who have trouble getting into books, as these are very fast paced and gripping.

The plot and pace of book itself was one well, but the world within the book seemed very briefly described. More about the world and the events that led up to this dystopian world are described as you read through the series, but leaves things out. Character development was one OK.... but didn't make the characters come to life. I really like the world that is make in these books and is one of my favorite dystopian series. A good book series to start to kill time and be transported into a new world.

“Sure you can be a coward and hope someone else changes the world for you. You can hide up in that attic of yours until someone knocks on the door and says, 'Oh, hey, they freed the hidden. Want to come out?' Is that what you want"
Luke didn't answer
"You've got to come, Luke, or you'll hate yourself the rest of your life. When you don't have to hide anymore, even years from now, there'll always be some small part of you whispering 'I don't deserve this. I didn't fight for it. I'm not worth it.' And you are, Luke, you are. You're smart and funny and nice, and you should be living life, instead of being buried alive in that old house of yours”

Basically, the Government has prohibited every family from having more than two children, and Luke just so happens to be a third child in the Garner family. Read this book to find out the outcome of Luke's third child status! (Hint - It's not what you expect :P)

Luke Garner is a third child in a society that only allows 2 or less children per family. He is doing his best to hide, and conceal his identity. He is ok with it, until his parents start to become really overprotective. The woods are cut down, and the government built "Baron" homes. He starts to think there is more to his life than hiding, especially when he finds another third child, who is courageous and wants to change everything. A story that will dramactically change, in a good way.
