Received by the British press with equal acclaim and indignation, this book sets out to define and defend high culture against the world of pop, corn, and popcorn. It shows just why culture matters in an age without faith and gives an extended argument against the "post-modernist" world view.

Scruton is a refreshing, uncomfortable read that will force you to look at the world around you and revaluate your compass. In this volume he gives a sincere rebuke to the culture in moral decline and gives some very old answers to a culture obsessed with newness. Describing himself as the "rebel's rebel" he argues for the virtue of conformity: to belong to a "higher" crowd that will provide a level of depth that goes past a generation to the pools of generations who have tried to preserve something worth having. Scruton will come off as a snob (and he is). if the title of the book doesn’t give that away, but it also shows some of his insight: he argues that for ethics to be possible we must approach each other with the honesty that we are humans capable of judgment, and not fear or dispel the power of our reasoning that gives judgment, ergo a pure liberal, who denies his own judgmental tendencies wouldn’t be caught dead reading a book with such a presumptuous title! It is a book for those who do not fear judgment, and are looking to explore their own understanding in a world that tells them not to exercise their judgement/reason.
