"In 1985, DC Comics dramatically altered comics' original universe with CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS, a 12-issue series that rocked the comics community, tragically dooming some of DC's most beloved characters and drastically altering others. An unforgettable and defining event in comics history, CRISIS was arguably the first companywide crossover to make good on its promise of lasting change. Written by Marv Wolfman and pencilled by George Perez, with inks by Dick Giordano, Jerry Ordway and Mike DeCarlo, CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS finds the alternate worlds that once were a hallmark of the DC Universe under siege by a mysterious force powerful enough to wipe out the lives of billions"--

DC comics had to do it because a) too many confusing universes for causal fan to understand & b) make it easier for their own writers. Making ton of money was secondary importance.
Good drama on characters wholesaling killed.

This is the novelization, not the comic. Still good, but don't expect the wrong thing.

Essential reading for fans of DC's multiverse of the 60's, 70's & 80's. Many universes are destroyed and the characters from them were recreated/rebooted for the 1980's "Post Crisis" Universe. This Earth would see changes to continuity in Zero Hour, Infinite Crisis and then again drastically in the recent "Flashpoint" which led to the "New 52" universe that current DC stories take place in.

This is one of my personal favourite stories of all-time.
