It Gets Better

Coming Out, Overcoming Bullying, and Creating a Life Worth Living
Dec 01, 2014
This book shows the power of social media. Annoyed with the LGBT teen suicides, Dan savage and his husband, Terry Miller set out to make a difference. They wanted to tell kids that getting through school is the key, that it doesn’t matter how awful things are at home or at school, it does get better. They will find friends, happiness and love. After Dan and Terry realized that it’d be nearly impossible to talk in high and middle schools, the places where homophobia does the most of the damage, it hit them that they didn’t need invitations nor permission to speak to kids of today. Not in a word where Twitter, Facebook and Youtube exist. They recorded and posted their "It Gets Better" video, hoping for a hundred similar videos from lgbt adults and straight allies. What they got were thousands of videos from everyday people and celebrities, companies and politicians (including President Obama), and positive responses and thanks from teens and parents struggling with homophobic bullying. This book includes tons of people writing about their challenges and experiences before coming out, during the period of coming out, and how it got better after a little bit time. This book is truly inspiring for those who are struggling with their sexualities, I hope that someone, somewhere that needs that message gets it. Because honestly, high school is no picnic for me either, but it's just four years of our lives. I’d recommend it to anyone that is facing any type of challenges because in addition to it talking about people from lgbt community, the moral of the book is that it does get better, whatever you are facing right now will fade soon and it gets better.
